Copy-editing

There are several different types of editing so it can be confusing if you’re new to the game. There are line-edits, copy-edits, proofreading, manuscript critiques and a whole lot more.

Copy-editing is a service for authors who’ve already completed a comprehensive edit. It comes towards the end of the publishing process to ensure that the copy-editor doesn’t spend time editing or re-arranging content that may be deleted or re-arranged after a line edit. The copy-edit is the last stage before the final proofread.

Copy-editing is the process of reviewing content to improve accuracy, readability and making certain it’s fit for purpose. This includes checking for mistakes, inconsistencies and repetition and that the story flows correctly, focusing on both the finer details and the big picture.

As well as reviewing spelling, grammar, punctuation, technical consistency and syntax, the copy-editor also checks and corrects the below amongst other things:

• Continuity errors and making sure that all loose ends are tied up
• Factually incorrect dates and statements (essential for non-fiction manuscripts)
• Potential legal liability and libel
• Inconsistencies within the story including character description, plot points, chronologies/timelines, places and settings.

In traditional publishing, copy-editing is a requirement, however, many self-publishers skip this step only to end up with a book with typos or a story and characters full of inconsistencies, which is not only embarrassing for the author, it can also be confusing for the reader.
